How to play

Make a terrible choice.

One player is the Czar. Everyone else submits an answer. The Czar picks the answer that makes them laugh, wince, or question the friendship.

Before the game

  1. Create a room and give it a name worthy of the occasion.
  2. Choose a maximum of 3–8 players. At least three players are required to start.
  3. The main pack is included automatically. The host may add optional packs before starting.
  4. Choose whether the game ends after a finite number of rounds or when a player reaches a chosen number of wins.
  5. Share the room code and wait for the players to join.

Each round

  1. The current Czar reveals a black prompt card.
  2. Every other player secretly chooses the required number of white answer cards from their hand.
  3. After 30 seconds, the Czar may call a 15-second timer. Players who have not submitted when it expires are timed out for that round.
  4. Once everyone has submitted, or the timer has expired, the Czar reviews the answers.
  5. The Czar chooses the winning answer. The winner gets one point.
  6. Players can discard unwanted cards at any time by opening a card's interactive menu and choosing Discard this card.
  7. The Czar role rotates and the next round begins. Hands refill to seven cards until the room’s ending condition is reached.

The only rule that matters

Everything is arbitrary and subjective. The Czar’s decision is final, even when it is obviously wrong.

Points mean nothing. There are no rankings, no skill rating, and no deeper meaning hiding in the scoreboard. They are just a running tally of who the Czar liked that round.

When the game ends

The winning round combinations are presented for a final Best Combo vote. This is separate from the game score and is just another opportunity to reward the funniest terrible decision.

Combinations are labeled by source: Player for a normal game answer and Random for a standalone random draw.

Random mode

Visit Random for a black card and the appropriate number of white cards without joining a room. Redraw as often as your dignity permits, or nominate a combination for Best of CAH.

Good to know

  • Players cannot submit answers while they are the Czar.
  • Each player starts with up to seven white cards and refills to seven at the start of a new round.
  • Some prompts require more than one answer card; the prompt tells you how many to pick.
  • Keep it fun, respect the people in the room, and remember that the Czar is probably going to choose the dumbest answer.
